New Knolly Chilcotin - An Enduro Bike Built for the Shore

The new Knolly Chilcotin is here - the second bike to receive Knolly’s Gen 6 updates. The 6th version of their suspension platform, Gen6 is a running refresh of all of their bikes, aimed at improving aesthetics, reliability, suspension kinematics and more. That means this version of the brand’s flagship enduro bike should be the best one yet.

What is the Chilcotin?

The Chilcotin is Knolly’s biggest, burliest bike, for sending big features and hitting the gnarliest lines. Rolling on 29” wheels front and rear and available in 170/170mm, and 155/160mm travel options, there’s bad, and badder. The Chilcotin is the bike to grab for pedalling to the top of the local mountain and bombing back down it as fast as possible. It’s a shuttle shredder, and a bike park slayer. In short, it’s the one bike for the roughest riding, short of racing downhill.

What does Gen6 get me?

The most obvious update the Gen6 Chilcotin receives is the straight top tube. Falling in line with modern bike aesthetics, the straight TT keeps things looking clean and makes for a low standover. Next up is the unified rocker link, machined from a single piece of aluminum rather than two, this stiffens the frame up and lessens lateral loads on the shock, meaning shocks should last longer. Finally, the bushings in the upper linkage have been replaced with Enduro bearings, meaning bearings throughout, for a smoother, more reliable ride.

Other Changes

Outside of the Gen6 updates, there are a bunch of other more general changes to the Chilcotin, including a SRAM UDH hanger, making the bike compatible with SRAM’s latest Transmission drivetrains. The dropper insertion has increased, making a 200mm dropper the norm across the whole size range. The underside of the top tube now features a tool mount, for clean mounting of emergency accessories - because why carry them on your body?

Frame Specs

Other important frame specs include internal cable routing, 180mm post brake mounts, a threaded BSA bottom bracket, Super Boost 157mm hub spacing, metric trunnion shocks and a 30mm lower shock mount for eyelet bearings. Expanded size options from S-XL, and 29” wheels - no mullet option. Currently available in four spec levels from $5,999 up to $7,799, and four colours: RAW, Laguna Blue, Kelly Green fade to Black, and Ano Black .

Suspension

The suspension curve on the new Chilcotin has changed just slightly. Bumping up a tiny bit in travel, from 151 to 155mm, and 167 to 170mm, the biggest change is in the pedalling dynamics, which have been firmed up to improve responsiveness under pedalling. This should make the bike more efficient and supportive under pedalling load. There is also a touch more small-bump sensitivity, as well as increased bottom out resistance.

Geometry

Geometry is the main change on the Gen6 Chilcotin. Growing a massive 20mm over the previous bike, the reach on the size L is now a huge 509mm (170mm bike), however the effective top tube only grows by about 9mm since the seat tube angle has steepened to 77.5/77º. A flip chip adjusts geometry by a few degrees, putting the head tube angle at 64.25/63.75º, and the bike now features size specific chainstays, varying from 438-450mm.

Build and Price

There are four build levels for the new Chilcotin, starting at $5,999 for the Deore spec, that gets a Marzocci Z1 fork, Rockshox Super Deluxe Ultimate Shock, Shimano Deore brakes, Deore 12sp Drivetrain and the same DT Swiss M1900 Spline wheelset and SDG Tellis dropper post across the range. Moving up, 155 builds come with a Fox 36 fork, and 170mm builds a Fox 38. At $7,099/$7,199 is the performance elite GX build, with Fox 38 OR Fox 36 Performance Elite fork, Super Deluxe Ultimate shock, SRAM GX mechanical drivetrain and Magura MT5 brakes. $7,299/$7,399 gets the Factory GX build, upgrading to Factory suspension with a Float X2 shock over the lower-tiered GX build, and topping out at $7,699/$7,799 is the Factory XT build, with Factory suspension and a full Shimano XT 12 speed drivetrain and brakes.
